Like most Italian cities, the Rome gay scene is petite; particularly since there are not many male lover bars in Rome. When I first came here in , there were just the two staple bars on the queer street next to the Colosseum: Coming Out and My Bar.

But in recent years, the gay Rome bars have started to take off in popularity, and they are not all centered around the Colosseum (although close enough to the city center).

On top of it, unlike in other European countries, Rome's gay bars often double as trattorias or place to get an aperitivo, but that is quintessential Italians for you, who are serious about combining alcohol intake with long, leisurely dinners 🤌.

The best advice is to come early for dinner or aperitivo and depart late to head to some of Rome's same-sex attracted clubs or gay parties.

As a queer person, I can attest to how easy it is to feel isolated in a foreign country. This past year, we saw our pride march officially cancelled and the resulting police scenes. Our movement has raised consciousness and made significant progress toward equality around the world, including in Turkey, so we own much to be confident of and look forward to. Still, many gender non-conforming people continue to battle with depression and ostracism. The various attacks and bombings this year own shocked and frightened all of us, but when you come from a community who is already oppressed, it can be that much easier to feel vulnerable. It is crucial that we combine in solidarity in these chaotic times. Gay, sapphic, bisexual, and transgender people need spaces where we can be ourselves and form friendships (and, of course, intimate relationships) with each other and heterosexual allies who sympathize with our struggle. Finding opportunities for this is not always easy, but they do exist in Istanbul.

While gay life in Istanbul may be subdued in universal, at night behind closed doors, there is a thriving and vibrant nightlife scene where locals and foreigners arrive together to sway, drink and socialize with their gender non-conforming family. Many homosexual clubs in Istanbul attract a mixed crowd, but we have done out best to distinguish these from the Istanbul gay clubs which have an active lgbtq+ focus.

There are many same-sex attracted bars in Istanbul most of which pull double duty as gay-cafes during the day – mostly around the gay area of Istanbul aka Taksim Square in Beyoglu district, which is the best place to head to start your darkness if you don’t already have a plan.
