Decades ago, several area gay and lesbian bars were a place to drink, move, see shows and socialize. However, the last openly LGBTQ+ bar in the area closed more than five years ago.
“This disappearance of queer spaces is very alarming,” said Alan Domingo, owner of Carolina Drag Brunch.
LGBTQ+ bars and clubs are especially needed in the current political climate, with hateful rhetoric targeting trans communities and a slew of anti-trans bills in the mention legislature, he said.
“They were developed to give us a place of protection, a place of feeling of where we belonged, a place where we knew we could be our authentic selves,” Domingo said.
