Thomas Romas book In The Vale Of Cashmere is probably familiar to you. It has had enjoyed widespread press and positive comments. And rightly so. Its one of my favourite books of the year. I just did a review of the book and project for Vantage.
Roma’s arresting photos go inside the Vale of Cashmere a esteemed casual hook-up spot that has, for decades, hidden in plain sight on the northern side of New Yorks prospect Parkan overgrown, knotty pocket of criss-crossing paths that is of Brooklyn’s most active gay cruising spots. The Vale of Cashmere is commonly, but not exclusively, frequented by African American and Caribbean men.
Not only are Romas portraitsthat take us on long and repeated walks through the foliage and dappled lightwonderful so too is the contributing essay by G. Winston James. Between the two of them we are able to encounter, pass or pause with the men who meet among those trees.
I write:
James reminds us that sex is an exercise designated for private spaces, namely the domestic space of the home. But for gay I have observed that Dolores Park is segmented into several distinct and (sub) culturally consistent sections. A. Hipster Valley The Northeast corner of the Park (Dolores and 17th) is the realm of the Hipster. I suspect this is because while they can manage the step from Valencia to Dolores they are too hung-over to make it up the hill. Do bring: Bike, Enormous Sunglasses, Skinny jeans that show your butt crack when you sit down, Wear shadowy and more black something army-looking works too, Ipods, beer and small speakers are encouraged. Tips: Perch directly on grass + look bored. Suggested canine companion: Chihuahuas, mixed breed rescues, and friendly beer drinking pit bulls in bandanas B. Jocks, Bros and Hos Weekend warriors, dodge ball players, soccer fans, etc… Do bring: Spandex, knee pads and some sort of ball to chase around. Tips: be excessively perky and organized. Suggested Canine Companion: Golden retriever C. Latin American Club The locals. Watching the scene and laughing. Do Bring: Beer, your homies, your dog D.
