The Straightwashing of Hercules and How Marvel Keeps Failing LGBTQ Readers

The mythological demigod Hercules is bi-curious. How you sense about that proof doesn't change the fact; the myths of antiquity possess told us that Hercules loved women and men alike. Lustfulness is at the core of his character, and Hercules' appetites aren't limited by gender.

Like many ancient myths, and like much of history, Hercules' stories have been bowdlerized by those who think lgbtq+ relationships are sinful. Audiences introduced to the character through the Disney cartoon, the Kevin Sorbo TV show, the Dwayne Johnson production, or the Marvel comics have fine reason to ponder the character is heterosexual, because that's all they've ever seen. But that doesn't make it true. Hercules is bisexual. To refuse that fact is to participate in the erasure of same-sex relationships on the grounds of a narrow and prescriptive morality.

Erasure used to be Marvel's official line on same-sex relationships; they were mature content, inappropriate for an all-ages audience.

Gay Hercules, Ultimate Taskmaster, and Moore!

I think we can all agree that speculation has become an insane, minute to minute adventure where if you aren’t at you pc or the comic shop 24/7 you are going to miss out. That can be a daunting task and is really unsustainable.  I am not sure where speculation goes from here.  Buy every first appearance?  Keep chasing those variants that will almost always depreciate?  Start collecting, buying and selling inception  art instead? Bring help Pogs?

No matter what the ride has been and remains fun!

Enjoy this weeks pics.

First Ultimate Taskmaster Cover

That taskmaster news sure has collectors going crazy for a certain issue of Ultimate All-New Spider-Man.  I’m inclined to stick with the actual first appearance of Taskmaster but if the Ultimate version is your thing his first cover was here and it’s actually pretty rad.

Wolverine & Hercules: Marvel's Most Badass Love Story

A multiverse presents infinite possibilities, including the Marvel planet where Wolverine and Hercules the Greek God joined forces to develop comics' most badass lovers. And proved their commitment by fighting their way out of Hell literally.

When ten evil versions of Charles Xavier are born throughout the multiverse, the X-Treme X-Men comic series is born, uniting a team of X-Men from a variety of realities on a mission to get rid of them, one by one. Among the team’s ranks are Dazzler of Marvel’s main universe, a severed Professor X head, a Black Cyclops from the era of his Earth’s American Civil War, and Howlett, a version of Weapon X described as “Wolverine-meets-Teddy Roosevelt. But still Canadian.”  Together they travel from one alternate reality to the next, executing evil Xaviers before the doppelgangers can pose a threat to all of existence. The team’s journey reunites Howlett and an alternate version of Hercules--who have much more history than their Earth counterparts.

Stan Lee and Jack Kirby crafted a version of the Greek demi-god that they introduced in In the American Comic Book Chronicles: The s ( &#; ) author John Wells notes in discussing the introduction of Hercules into Marvel Comics that Marvel&#;s version of the Greek demi god was influenced by the Italian movies starring Hercules and related movies based on Greek myths which often starred Steve Reeves. These movies were a Saturday afternoon rerun staple of the local TV station at one point during my minor hood. Actor Reeves in his revealing costume made quite an impression on me though for reasons there weren&#;t completely distinct for some years still. Steve Reeves&#; sex appeal was undeniable and became a fantasy for Tim Curry&#;s Dr Frank N Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

The Marvel version of Hercules shares much of the
